The Asian research programme focuses on policy-oriented studies for central banks and supervisory authorities in the Asia-Pacific region. The three-year research programme was endorsed by the Asian Consultative Council at its February 2006 meeting. The programme began in September 2006, and will end in August 2009.
Research projects are undertaken by economists in the BIS Asian Office in collaboration with the research departments of Asian central banks, supervisory authorities and policy research centres. Progress has been made on a number of research projects that are intended to help regional authorities to improve monetary policy and operations, to develop financial markets, to maintain financial stability and to strengthen prudential policy. The research has not only led to publications in refereed journals, BIS Quarterly Review, and BIS Working Papers, but also fed into the numerous meetings jointly organised with regional central banks on issues related to financial market development, monetary policy and financial stability.
To complement the Asian research programme, the BIS Asian Office has organised two research networks: one focusing on monetary policy and exchange rates and another focusing on financial markets and institutions. The networks share information on policy issues, identify collaborative projects and organise workshops. Two research networks held their first annual workshops in January 2008.
